VMWare machines keep dissapearing from SCVMM

Hi

We are in the process of planning a migration from VMware to Hyper-V 2012. We have mirrored our live environment in the lab, but are having a few issues.

VMware, we have two hosts, running ESXi 4.1

Hyper-V we have 2 hosts running Server 2012 Data Centre in a HA Cluster

Management software is VMM 2012, SP1.

Periodically, throughout the day, VM's on the ESXi servers keep on disappearing from VMM. A little while later they will come back again. Sometimes all of them disappear, other times 3 or 4, other times again could be 10 out of the 18 have gone.

The other issue is about converting V2V from VMware to HV. When we try and run the process with VMM, there are only 5 out of the 17 machines listed.

Can anyone offer any advice?

cannot get a full working ESX host into SCVMM 2012 SP1 Beta

Hi,

I have a SCVMM 2012 SP1 Beta running. I added a vCenter 5.1 and also one ESX 5.0 Host server. I choose secure Mode in vCenter server and successfully imported the certificate. The ESX Host has a Status "OK (limited)". So I marked the ESX host and went to Properties -> Managedment and there went to "Retrieve". The thumbprint of the certificate is show but as soon as I click on OK I get the following error:

ID 2951 : the virtual machine manager cannot complete virtual center action ....: Cannot complete the login due to an incorrect username or password.

I don't have an idea what the error is. I checked and double checked that there is no error with my run as account on the vmm server and on the esx host. Is there a way to see exactly what permissions are missing? Or any other ideas?

VMWare Virtual Lab for 70-640/680/685/642

I'm working for a charity organisation providing free level 3 technical courses (70-640/680/685 and 70-642).  We have been for the last two years and are currently using VMware 7 64-bits on Windows 7 64-bits host machines for our virtual lab environments for all the mentioned MCITP/MCTS courses. I'm not an IT trainer, but have been given the responsibility to manage the IT budget.  Recently, my colleague (an IT trainer for the courses) requested an upgrade of our VMWare 7 to VMWare 9. As we are a charity organisation and funding is limited and moreover, I would like to know if the upgrade is justify and necessary, following are the reasons my colleague given for the need to upgrade:

  • AD-FSM - with VM Routing configuration which the older version doesn't support
  • The new version support VLSM and VPN with Host network configuration, which the older doesn't
  • Most of the Server configurations works with 64 bits and the earliest is mainly support 32/64, and we need native 64bit support.
  • Most of our students use the latest version VMWARE at home and when they are trying to synchronise their work, they are having problem on the older version.

Do any of the above mentioned courses need (AD-FSM - with VM Routing) in order for us to deliver the courses, after all, we have been delivering them on VMWare 7?

I'm not sure about the second reason... do we need it? Again, we have been delivering the courses on VMWare 7

The third reason doesn't seems to make any senses at all since all our host machines are running on 64-bits OS with VMWare 64-bits, so what are the 64-bits server configurations that a VMWare 64-bits does not support?

We can disregard the last reason, as it clearly not hindering our delivery of the courses.

All your expert advice on this is much appreciated.

Can someone clarify if VMM 2012 SP1 supports ESXi5.0?

Technet link shows that it supports ESX5.0 but it is not mentioned about ESXi5.0

http://technet.microsoft.com/library/gg697603.aspx

For VMM in System Center 2012 SP1:

  • ESX 5.0
  • ESXi 4.1
  • ESX 4.1

How do I add a VMWare VM to the SCVMM 2012 SP1 library so I can do a V2V?

Hi,

Using SCVMM 2012 SP1.

I am trying to convert a VMWare VM  (by which I mean, a .vmx file and a .vmdk file) as described here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg610672.aspx. The article says "The source virtual machine can be stored in the VMM library or managed by a VMware ESX host.".  The VM was created in ESX 5.1.  When I copy the files to the library and refresh it, SCVMM console lists the .vmdk file as an object, but I don't see anything in Library view representing the VM as a whole, and when I use the Convert Virtual Machine Wizard, I don't see the VM listed as a potential source.

Any ideas how I can get SCVMM to recognize the VMWare VM?

thanks!

Martin

Any ideas appreciated!

Having issues with customizing VMs based on vcenter templates

$

I am wondering if there are any resources I am not aware of.

I need to do the following:

1. Create a VMWare VM using vcenter 5.1 controlling esxi 5.0.

2. Clone that VM to a template using vcenter.

3. Import VMWare template into SCVMM 2012 SP1.

4. Create a customized VM where I change the client OS machine name, join the VM to a domain, and assign product key, in SCVMM using the imported VMWare template.

The behavior I am interested in is a fully customized VM after the "Create VM in Cloud" job is done in SCVMM.

The behavior I am witnessing is the end VM is a duplicate of the Template VM without any of the customizations applied.

This works beautifully with Hyper-V, what am I doing wrong?

Note, I did not run sysprep before converting the VMWare VM to a Template in VCenter.

If this helps you then please mark the post as helpful.
If this answers your question then mark it as the answer.
If another contributor in the thread answers your question then please do the right thing.
And as always most answers for SharePoint are based on "It depends"

Template creation from Linux VM is not supported.

We're trying to import a Redhat 6.3 VMware template into VMM 2012 SP1.

When we select the template we get this error.

Template creation from Linux VM is not supported.

Please use a Linux VM template to create another Linux VM Template.

ID: 22723

The process works fine for Windows but no good on Linux

How to import VM from Workstation to Hyper-V

Hi,

Does anyone know of a way to import a VMWare Workstation virtual machine into Hyper-V? I have SCVMM 2012 installed but it is looking for Virtual Centre or ESX rather than workstation. I also came across the OVF set of cmdlets but after exporting the VM Workstation guest to OVF, converting the vmdk to vhd the cmdlet bombs on UnknwonVirtualSystemType.

Thanks

Paul

ESX Host Status OK (Lmited)

I am experimenting with managing VMWare ESX 5.1 hosts with  SCVMM 2012 SP1 and attended the MVA Webinar yesterday. It was very good and solve one of the problems that I have been having. I was getting a variety of security errors that looked like it could not log on to the ESX server. The seminar explained that actually there were two states "Limited" and "Normal" and the default "Normal" has only some basic capabilities. In any case the solution was to create a Run as Account with the ESX Root ID and password. Then use that account to connect each host and accept the certificate. This worked great and solved my problem. Now for the question.

The webinar show briefly a chart of the differences between OK (Limited) and OK. Does anyone know where that chart is? I wasn't able to get it all down and  I would like it for reference before the notes from the webinar are published. Thanks.
